Overview
BUIDL Bot is a 3D robot character I modeled, shaded and animated in Blender and rendered in Cycles. The project pairs a wide 16:9 film with square stills of the character and two square animations.
The challenge
The character had to feel friendly and solidly built at the same time. That meant a simple silhouette and a readable face from any angle, and glossy plastics that hold clean highlights on a dark set without the reflections turning noisy.
Approach
- I kept the proportions toy-like: a large rounded head, a compact torso and slim jointed limbs. The face is a dark glass visor with two glowing yellow-green eyes, and the ear discs carry small chrome lenses.
- The materials fall into three groups: glossy amber shell panels, deep navy accent panels, and black mechanical joints with a ribbed neck. Small markings on the chest and hips keep the large surfaces from feeling empty.
- I lit him on a dark ribbed backdrop with soft rectangular sources that show up as clean reflections on the shell, over a reflective floor that picks up his color. The close-ups use a low camera to give a small figure some presence.
